Cape Town is known for being an amazing location for surfers. There are plenty of beaches to hit the waves. If you’ve ever wondered which beach is the best for surfing, Muizenberg may just be the one. Did you know that Muizenberg is famous for being the birthplace of surfing in South Africa? My brother and I briefly stopped by the beach when we were exploring the Cape Peninsula (we visited a penguin colony on the same day).
Surfing at Muizenberg Beach
Muizenberg is a favourite summer spot for locals and tourists alike, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a visit in other seasons. Even though it was the middle of winter, there were still lots of people out surfing at Muizenberg Beach. The sun was out, so the weather was quite pleasant, but wetsuits were definitely a must!
Sharks at Muizenberg
Muizenberg is situated along False Bay, which is known for its population of White Sharks. Thankfully, you don’t need to worry about shark attacks. The town is home to a shark watch service that signals alerts when sharks are nearby.
How to get to Muizenberg Beach
We passed through Muizenberg on a tour bus, but there is also another way to get to the beach on your own accord. Renting a car is a good option to navigate the Cape Peninsula, but there are also regular commuter trains. These trains run from Cape Town to Muizenberg (and back) on both weekdays and weekends. The train ride usually takes about 45 minutes.
Since we only had time for a quick break, we didn’t have time to go into the water, which was a shame. Then again, I’ve never surfed before, so maybe it wouldn’t have been a good idea anyway. Seriously though, it would be nice to learn how to surf one day. What better location for a first surf lesson than Cape Town?
Nice article Roselinde! I surfed quite a few times in Muizenberg and it’s a really nice place for beginners! Had to wear a full wetsuit because of the freezing water, but still so much fun 🙂 South Africa is definitely a great place for surfing (and learning how to surf).
Thanks for your comment! I’m sure I’ll get to make an attempt at surfing someday, hahah. Would be really great if I could return to South Africa for that someday.
shark watch or not, I wouldn’t put my big tow in those waters !!!!!!
Hahahah, I think I would probably have second thoughts as well! Thanks for your comment 🙂
