Czech Republic: The Incredible Krkonoše Mountains

Krkonoše Mountains: The Giant Mountains

The Krkonoše mountains (Karkonosze in Polish) or “Giant mountains” are located in both the north of the Czech Republic and south-west of Poland. The upper range is part of a national park, which is called Krkonosze National Park. Sněžka Mountain is the highest mountain peak in the Giant Mountains region, better known as “snowy top”. I (partially) climbed Sněžka Mountain back in the summer of 2010 and the views were stunning!

Hiking in the Krkonoše Mountain Range

We started our hike from the town of  Pec pod Sněžkou, where a chairlift took us up towards the peak. Everybody had to wait in line for a long time, but it was a wonderfully sunny day. We walked the last bit up to the summit and reached the highest point of the mountain. We could see Poland in the distance. The Czech-Polish border runs along the main ridge, so the mountain also forms a natural border between the two countries. After our ascent to the top, we began our long hike back down.

Treasured Travel Memory

I took most of these photos during our hike down the mountain, whilst I was on family vacation with my parents. I wish I had had enough guts to take a few photos whilst we were dangling above the deep “abyss” in our chairlift carriage. How incredible would those views have been to show you here on my blog? Unfortunately, I was only 17 and scared of dropping my new camera, so I opted not to.

In reflection, I think this hike really sparked my interest in travel photography. When I look at these photos, I realise it is still one of my most treasured travel memories with my family. I definitely want to go back and explore more of the Krkonoše Mountain range in the future. Who wouldn’t, though? I think it’s safe to say it’s one of the more beautiful natural regions in Europe!

  1. There are so many beautiful places in Czech Republic! Just recently I got into rock climbing and came across the territory of Bohemian Switzerland — those rock towers and massifs are incredible! I can understand that climbers can easily establish an emotional bond with the area (well, not only climbers)..This definitely is one of those countries I´d love to visit.
