Dutch Winter Time in 13 Photos: The Best Place to Enjoy the Snow in Breda

The Dutch winter time has changed over the years. Our grandparents will tell us about the times that all the lakes and canals froze over and they went ice-skating in town with all of their friends. Nowadays, it’s very rare to to see several days icy temperatures of decent snowfall. This year, however, we were lucky enough to see a glimpse of what a ‘real’ winter time would have looked like.

When the snow started falling, I was at home with my parents and siblings to celebrate Christmas. I grew up in Breda, a city in the southern half of the Netherlands. The best place to enjoy the snow in Breda is, undoubtedly, the Mastbos. The Mastbos is a big stretch of woodlands with lakes and beautiful paths among the tall trees, located right on the edge of the city. I really love that place so much. I didn’t expect the Mastbos to look even more beautiful than ever before.

In autumn and winter, it is quite rare to see a beautifully sunny day in the Netherlands. The combination of the sparkly white crystals of the frozen snow and the warm and yellow glow of the setting sun created the perfect setting for a photo walk. I don’t think I will ever forget this day, it almost felt like I was walking inside a dreamy landscape from a video game or idyllic painting.

Winter Holiday in Breda

This post is Part II of my blog posts about my winter adventures during Christmas break:

One magical day in December, snowflakes fell and covered the ancient lands of Noord-Brabant (and also much larger and more significant parts of Europe). Lots and lots of snowflakes. We’ve been having pretty mild winters lately so I was excited to wear mittens again. I think it was my first time seeing any snow again after two whole years, madness!

These photos were all taken in the Mastbos near Breda, where I grew up. I had never seen the place so lively and crowded before, but it was actually a lot of fun to watch everybody attempt to sled off of non-existing hills. If you’d like, you can read more about this day in the first blogpost over here.

But wait, I have a challenge for you! This time it’s a pretty tough one: Can you find the snowman? He’s chillin’ in the background of one of these photos.
