Usually, I’m not a big fan of those typical travel girl quotes, but I’ll have to make an exception for this one: a trip to the beach is like medicine for the soul. Honestly, the beach really is my happy place. I always feel so much better afterwards, all fresh and warmed up by the sun. Even if it’s not a very sunny day, a walk along the wide and windy beach will keep my worries at bay. I like them so much that the sandy beaches are probably my favourite thing about living in the Netherlands.
The Best Beaches in the Netherlands for the Summer Season
We’re smack-bang in the middle of the European summer right now, so I think it’s finally time to tell you about my all-time favourite beachy destinations in the Netherlands. Today, I’m sharing a list of the 5 best beaches in the Netherlands!
5. Zoutelande Beach in Zeeland
I’m not going to lie about it, Zeeland isn’t exactly my favourite region to spend those those sunny summer days. One day, however, I had barely visited the province when I stumbled across a hidden gem. I was exploring the southern coast and when I got to Zoutelande Beach, I was genuinely mesmerized. The view of the dunes and the beach is a unique sight in the Netherlands. The reason for putting this one at number five is the fact that Zoutelande is quite far away from most cities. You’ll have to take the train and bus to get there.
4. Hollum Beach on Ameland
You might not know this, but the Netherlands has several Frisian islands. One of those small northern islands is Ameland, which is mostly made up out of sand dunes. Every single beach on that island looks incredible, but the most beautiful one is definitely Hollum beach. It’s right by the iconic lighthouse and the sunsets are to die for. You do have to be careful if you want to go swimming. The current can be dangerously strong.
3. Scheveningen Beach in The Hague
One of the most famous beaches in the Netherlands is Scheveningen beach in The Hague. The beach has a beautiful boulevard, recently renovated pier, and overall happy vibes. The beach is less than 30 minutes away from the city centre, so you can totally combine a visit to the beach with a city trip in The Hague!
3.5 Bonus Tip: Kijkduin Beach near The Hague
The Hague’s other and slightly smaller seaside district is Kijkdijn. Honestly, it’s just as lovely as Scheveningen, it just depends on your own preferences. Kijkduin is a little less urban, but that also means that the seaside’s natural coastal atmosphere is still intact.
2. Zandvoort Beach near Amsterdam
If you’re travelling from Amsterdam, Zandvoort beach is your best bet! From Amsterdam Central it will only take you about 30 minutes to get to Zandvoort aan Zee. It’s a bit of a resort town, so you’ll see a lot of tourists, but the general mood is always delightfully upbeat. You’ll definitely feel like you’re away on summer holiday. If you prefer more of a natural environment and less crowded beaches, you can also rent a bike and go on a 30 minute cycling trip to Langevelderslag, another beach in Zandvoort. Just head into the direction of Noordwijk, keep going straight and you will be there in a jiffy.
1. Duindamseslag Beach near Noordwijk
If you want to feel like you’re completely out and about in nature, away from the urban jungle, then pack your bag and go to Duindamseslag. In order to get to the beach, you’ll have to cycle along some of the most beautiful dunes in the Netherlands. It’s always a lot less busy compared to the beaches in Zandvoort and Noordwijk, but there are still enough facilities. You’ll also find a great beach pavilion where they sell drinks, sandwiches, and a good selection of ice cream. This is the beach where I spent most of my childhood summers!
What do you think, do you agree with my selection? Are you planning on visiting any of these 5 beaches this summer? Let me know in the comment section below!
The first one in Zeeland is amazing, I didn’t even know we had beaches like that.
Don’t I wish! But Dutch beaches are a LONG way from New England, and I don’t feel up to kayaking over! Maybe some year – at least now I know there are beaches! Thank you –
Hahah, I’m sure one day you’ll feel the Dutch sand between your toes! 😉
I couldn\’t agree more, Rosalinde. Beach is my happy place as well. I\’ve always been drawn by the water and seem to gain energy from it. Mountains never seem to be quite the same. I loved reading this post, because I never associated Netherlands with beaches. The first thing that comes to mind is either Amsterdam\’s picture-perfect canals or Keukenhof\’s colorful tulip fields. So nice to see another side of this beautiful country! xx, nano | http://www.travelwithnanob.com
Thanks for your comment Nano! Nice to hear you feel the same. Mountains can be so enjoyable, but I never feel more at peace than at the beach. I always feel like the Dutch beaches may be our best kept secret 🙂
